James Oxygen & Supply Company Sees Great Results using TruckStops |
Arlington, VA - April 6, 2006 -James Oxygen & Supply Company, Hickory, North Carolina, has had some tremendous results using TruckStops Routing & Scheduling software. James Oxygen has been using TruckStops for seven months to route their five trucks; TruckStops is a powerful, user-friendly tool to create cost-effective vehicle routes and schedules while reducing transportation costs, increasing driver productivity, and improving customer service.
"We have only used TruckStops for one winter heating season, but already know it has become a valuable part of our business," says Vance James of James Oxygen & Supply Company. "In the past our drivers would arrange their routes on their own. This would take 30-45 minutes each day. Now they are given a map with turn by turn directions. TruckStops has reduced our miles driven per gallons of propane sold by 21% and increased our stops per miles driven. TruckStops has also reduced our overtime by 50%. With all of these improvements we plan to switch one of our trucks to backup status next season."
MicroAnalytics' President Mike Hooban says, "It is great to see a customer getting excellent results using TruckStops in such a short period of time. James Oxygen has been committed to TruckStops from the beginning and they are seeing all the benefits of our vehicle routing software."
James Oxygen & Supply has been owned and operated by the same family since its founding in 1956. Customers throughout western North Carolina know they can trust the company's reputation for quality products and dependable service. Their compressed gases and propane products are considered to superior products. The James Oxygen staff in charge of the company's propane gas operation are thoroughly trained and nationally certified for maintenance and delivery.

High-Tech Innovations Drive Success |
February 12th, 20007--Food Logistics Magazine
...TruckStops is the routing and scheduling optimization software program developed by MicroAnalytics in Arlington, VA. "We receive requests for GPS functionality as well," says Dan Buttarazzi, director of marketing. "Customers can now take their route information created by TruckStops and send it to a handheld GPS unit. Another trend is tracking drivers through XATA GPS or even cell phones with built-in GPS."
Interfacing with PC*Miler from ALK, TruckStops develops a sequence of routes, including the locations of truck stops, tolls, and gas stations. "Once our clients determine the best sequence of routes and stops through our interface with PC*Miler, they get their turn-by-turn directions, critical information such as where are low bridges and truck-restricted roads," Buttarazzi says.
TruckStops software is installed on office PCs, as well as local and wide-area networks. "That information, interfacing with PC*Miler, will provide fleet operations managers with a printout they can hand to their drivers," Buttarazzi says.
This means calculating what is being delivered to each stop, truck capacity and time required to unload. TruckStops calculates a scheduling and routing solution in a matter of minutes. "So time saved in developing routes is significant," says Buttarazzi. "In terms of customer service, its invaluable. TruckStops allows you to give an estimated time of arrival within a window of 10 or 15 minutes, rather than the traditional four-hour window."

Moving Plants Without Losing Profits |
MicroAnalytics was promently mentioned in the following article from Greenhouse Grower Magazine:
Moving Plants Without Losing Profits
New technologies and techniques help growers maximize and keep track of shipments.
by SARA TAMBASCIO Managing Editor
 |
| Peninsula Trucking utilizes more trailer space by using adjustable racks. |
Pushpins in a wall map may not be the best way to track logistics of perishable products like plants. Rising costs for fuel and drivers, all while growers are trying to cut costs, have led growers and transportation pros to look for new efficiencies.
Packing each truck to capacity is key, according to Richard Martins of Peninsula Trucking. Thats why the company uses a multi-decked trailer system. Shelves are adjusted to plant height and Peninsula trucks sizes from cell packs to 3 gallon pots with this setup. Trucks are loaded last in, first out and the shelves are broken down as plants are offloaded. The shelves also allow growers to ship foliage without boxing, saving packaging costs as well as labor. Theres less waste, also.
"Were able to save the grower some money with the way we ship - with the shelving - as compared to having everything boxed," Martins says. He says the biggest boost to improved shipping costs would be for growers to work together on combined shipments - shipments from several growers on one truck. For the most part, this isnt happening.
"If the receiver is large enough, Im sure it is going on. But in terms of smaller-type people, theres no one way to hook it all together," Martins says. "The other thing would be if the growers cooperated with each other. In Florida, thats a bit odd because everyone competes with each other. They all ship to the same people and everyone tries to keep their information private." Customers can order partial loads to be shipped by Peninsula Trucking, and seven or eight partials make up one load. Sharing shipments with different types of cargo can also help ease the shipping costs, trucking wicker and pottery along with plants, for example.
Changing Technologies The technologies used when shipping have changed in the last five years, too.
"The big thing were seeing now is global positioning system (GPS) units and integrating them into vehicle routing software," says Dan Buttarazzi of MicroAnalytics, provider of TruckStops software. "People want to see where their trucks are at all times."
TruckStops integrates with GPS devices, sending routes directly to handheld or truck units. Mapping technology has also improved, Buttarazzi says, taking new housing developments, roads, bypasses and highways into account when planning routes.

Delray Farms On Common Carriers
Delray Farms ships from Florida all over the United States. Here are tips from Delrays Spencer Bennet on common carriers:
1 Develop a relationship with your carrier base so they understand your business and expectations.
2 Create a score card for your carriers to help them in identifying their strengths and weaknesses to better serve your companys needs.
3 Trucking is not an exact science due to a multitude of variables. Honest communication between the nursery and the carrier does allow preparation for the unexpected, aiding in the loading and delivery process.
4 I have found using select core carriers with year-round pricing will save more money than shopping loads by rates. Typically new carriers dont understand the perishability of nursery product and the challenges of delivering to chain stores. Not knowing these basic requirements results in a higher claim ratio compared to using core carriers. The money saved by cheaper freight rates is usually lost due to an increase of claims.
5 Using core carriers aids in driver feedback as the same drivers consistently deliver your loads. A relationship with these drivers can identify problems in loading, packaging and delivery issues. Being aggressive on these issues and seeking solutions ultimately aids in helping your bottom line while giving the customer better service.

Routing software like TruckStops takes a nightmare math problem (10 trucks, 100 stops), works out an algorithm and solves the problem - maybe even cutting down the number of trucks from 10 to eight or nine. The software can also help determine the best routes for picking up empty racks, based on existing routes and space availability on the trucks. Smaller and larger growers use the software the same way.
"Theres no difference between the big guy and the small guy except the size of their problem," Buttarazzi says. "Its the same problem, just on a bigger scale."
Using a software product, over using simple mapping, is a step many growers are still making. The upfront investment can see a quick return on investment and can prevent lots of headaches. Buttarazzi asked a prospective customer recently why he was interested in TruckStops software.
"He said, ‘Its not fun planning the routes for 45 trucks, all making multiple stops. I miss a stop here and there, forget to put a stop on the route and it takes me a long time. I need to speed the whole process up. It makes life easier for you and thats the bottom line. People could still use typewriters, but using a computer is a little better."
MicroAnalytics also offers OptiSite software, which helps determine the best location in the U.S. for a distribution center. The program can help growers who are planning a new facility or are looking to close one of several distribution facilities, figuring which is best to close and which of the remaining facilities those displaced customers should be served from.
